The British government announced a sweeping overhaul of the country's immigration system on Monday, unveiling the "biggest-ever cut" to net migration in the UK's history, according to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The new measures represent a drastic tightening of rules for migrants looking to live and work in Britain. Sunak claimed the changes will reduce the number of people able to move to the UK annually by "hundreds of thousands."

Key aspects of the plan include raising the minimum salary threshold for skilled workers by nearly 50%, limiting dependants for students and health care workers, and eliminating the 20% salary discount for shortage occupations.

"We've just announced the biggest-ever cut in net migration. No Prime Minister has done this before in history," Sunak declared on social media after unveiling the policy.
The prime minister said net migration levels were too high and his government is determined to reduce them. But the proposals have sparked a backlash from the opposition Labour Party.

"Today's statement is an admission of years of total failure by this Conservative government," said Labour's home affairs spokesperson Yvette Cooper.
She accused the Tories of being in a "chaotic panic" over immigration.
The measures follow years of tension within the ruling Conservative party over immigration policy. But the tough new rules could also cause workforce shortages in key sectors like health care and agriculture that have relied on foreign workers.
The coming months will reveal whether Sunak's historic immigration crackdown succeeds or stumbles.
