In a recent update, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has confirmed that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has successfully completed its orbits around Earth and is now heading towards the moon. The national space agency announced the spacecraft's progress in the early hours of Tuesday, August 1.
"A successful perigee-firing performed at ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network). ISRO has injected the spacecraft into the translunar orbit," the national agency said.
"Next stop: the moon. As it arrives at the moon, the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI) is planned for August 5, 2023," it added.
ISRO has also set its sights on an important event scheduled for August 5, 2023 – the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI), during which the spacecraft is intended to enter the Moon's orbit. The agency is optimistic about Chandrayaan-3's chances of a soft landing on the lunar surface which is planned for August 23 and 24.
Prior to this, the orbit of the spacecraft was gradually boosted by five times following the July 14 launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon.
Chandrayaan-3 is a successor to the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which encountered a setback when its lander crashed upon entering lunar orbit. This time, the spacecraft consists of both a lander and a rover, developed by ISRO, with the aim of safely landing on the Moon's surface, conducting scientific experiments, and collecting valuable data. The successful completion of the mission will undoubtedly be a milestone for India's space exploration efforts.
