The Xinhua News Agency reported that China National Petroleum Corp. began drilling the Shendi Chuanke 1 Well on Thursday, which is designed to reach a depth of 10,520 meters (6.5 miles).

This project is followed by another same-size well that was drilled earlier this May. Accordingly, it’s a hole with a designed depth of about 10,000 meters in the ground, and it seeks ultra-deep reserves of natural gas.

Earlier, it was described that the well was experimental in nature and designed to test the drilling technologies and give some data about the internal structure of the earth.

Other than this, Sichuan, which is the southeastern province is popular for its spicy food and spectacular mountainside views, and even pandas. It is known to be the home to some of the country's largest shale gas reserves.

Despite difficult terrain and complicated underground geology, the country's state-owned oil giants have had limited success tapping their potential.

The Chinese government has urged energy companies to boost domestic production amid power shortages, geopolitical strife, and volatile global prices in recent years.

When completed these will be 2 of the deepest manmade boreholes. However, The title deepest still lies with Kola Superdeep Borehole in north-west Russia which is about 12,262 meters deep and took 20 years to reach this depth.
