Citizen Lab, a digital watchdog organization, has revealed the discovery of spyware associated with the Israeli company NSO that exploits a recently identified vulnerability in Apple devices. The exploit was detected during an examination of an Apple device belonging to an employee of a Washington-based civil society group. According to Citizen Lab, this flaw had been leveraged to infect the device with NSO's Pegasus spyware.
John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, emphasized the significance of civil society organizations acting as early warning systems against highly sophisticated cyberattacks. However, specific details regarding the affected individual and organization were not disclosed by Citizen Lab.
The vulnerability in question allowed bad actors to compromise iPhones running the latest iOS version (16.6) without requiring any interaction from the device's owner, as noted by the digital watchdog.
Apple promptly responded to the reported flaws by releasing new updates for its devices. An Apple spokesperson declined to provide additional comments, but Citizen Lab encouraged users to promptly update their devices for protection.
As for NSO, the Israeli firm known for its controversial spyware, they refrained from offering an immediate response to the Citizen Lab research findings. It's worth noting that NSO has faced allegations of misconduct, including the surveillance of government officials and journalists, resulting in its blacklisting by the US government since 2021.
