Dwayne Fields Appointed as UK’s 11th Chief Scout
In a historic move, Dwayne Fields was officially appointed as the 11th Chief Scout of the United Kingdom in September 2024. He follows in the footsteps of Bear Grylls, who held the role for 15 years. With this appointment, Fields becomes the first Black person to lead the Scouts in its 117-year history.
🌍 A Journey from London Streets to Polar Ice
Born in Jamaica and raised in Stoke Newington, London, Fields overcame many hardships growing up, including exposure to street violence. Joining the Scouts gave him a new direction and a love for nature and adventure. In 2010, he made history by becoming the first Black Briton to walk to the Magnetic North Pole.
His journey from a difficult youth to a polar explorer has inspired many and now adds to the Scouts’ mission to show young people what’s possible with courage and support.
🎙️ A Voice for Youth and Representation
As Chief Scout, Fields hopes to encourage more young people—especially from underrepresented communities—to join the Scouts. He’s passionate about giving them access to outdoor adventure, leadership training, and mentors who reflect their backgrounds and experiences.
Fields believes that young people need role models who show them that their background doesn’t limit what they can achieve.
📺 On Screen and in the Community
Outside the Scouts, Dwayne Fields is a familiar face on screen. He co-presents 7 Toughest Days on National Geographic and Disney+, where he takes on extreme environments around the world. He’s also the co-founder of the WeTwo Foundation, which creates expedition opportunities for underprivileged youth, helping them build confidence and life skills through travel and challenge.
🧒 Encouraging Young People to Dream Big
Fields wants to break barriers for kids who think opportunities like Scouts or outdoor exploration aren’t for them. By sharing his own story, he hopes more young people will believe they can aim higher, explore the world, and make a difference.
🤝 Partnership With Schools and Local Groups
Under his leadership, Scouts UK plans to build stronger connections with schools and local communities. Fields wants scouting activities to reach young people who may never have considered joining before, especially in urban areas.
