In a groundbreaking move, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, disclosed why he decided to rebrand the renowned social media platform Twitter as 'X,' accompanied by a departure from its iconic blue-bird logo.
Musk unveiled that the acquisition of Twitter was driven by a twofold purpose: to safeguard freedom of speech and serve as an accelerant for his grand vision - the creation of 'X,' the everything app.
Interestingly, the notion of renaming Twitter as 'X' had been brewing in Musk's mind well before he officially took over the platform. As early as October 4, 2022, in his initial comments following the news of the Twitter deal, Musk shared in a tweet, "Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app."
Musk emphasized that this move was not solely about changing the company's name but rather about aligning it with its evolving purpose. Twitter had already outgrown its original identity, which once made sense when it was primarily a platform for 140-character messages like the birds tweeting. Twitter has evolved into a diverse medium allowing users to share extensive content, including hours of video.
Elon Musk also dropped hints about the changes that will be introduced in the coming months, particularly transforming the platform into a comprehensive financial app
"In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird," Musk emphasized.
