A seven-year Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) action plan was unveiled by India on Monday during the G20 Development Ministers meeting in Varanasi.

The three main themes of the plan are investing in women-led development, ensuring equitable transitions, and utilizing data and digital technology for development.

The 2016 action plan, which had difficulties implementing, was followed by the announcement of the new plan, which coincides with worldwide setbacks for the SDGs.

“If the SDGs were not already advanced toward before COVID-19, this has only been made worse by it. Additionally, the effects of climate change, which have an outsized influence on the least developed nations and small island developing states, continue unabatedly. In light of supply chain disruptions, a protracted financial crisis, and strains on the security of oil, food, and fertilizer,” foreign minister S. Jaishankar indicated that the chances of a global economic recovery remain slim.

He further stated, not only have we seen the political impetus wane, but we have also seen the fragmentation of international agendas, where certain objectives are judged more crucial than others. Such cherry-picking is not in the interest of our whole community.

The new strategy, unveiled during India's G20 Presidency, aims to resurrect SDG progress. Based on the nation's experience utilizing technology to bring about social change, it highlights India's commitment to an inclusive, data-driven approach to public digital infrastructure.

The action plan also urges closing the digital divide, boosting women's food security, and improving their nutrition. It also asks for more economic and social empowerment for women. It also expresses a dedication to encouraging fair, inclusive, and sustainable transitions on a global scale.

"We reiterate our dedication to encouraging equitable, inclusive, and sustainable transitions on a global scale. To guarantee that no one is left behind, efforts must be made during these transitions to attain global net zero GHG emissions/carbon neutrality by or around the middle of the century." The action plan states that similar changes "should ensure energy security, access, affordability, competitiveness, sustainable economic development and prosperity, and environmental conservation and protection all at the same time."
