The Goa Government has taken a firm stand against Uber India Systems Private Limited, accusing the ride-hailing company of operating illegally within the coastal state. Despite the government's earlier declaration that app-based taxi aggregators like Uber would not be allowed to operate in Goa, the company launched its services, including airport pick-up and drop, without seeking permission.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho announced that the state's transport department has filed a formal complaint against Uber for conducting business without proper authorization. The government has urged the police to take immediate action against the app-based taxi aggregator.
Assistant Director Transport Francisco Vaz filed the complaint with the cybercrime cell, stating that Uber has been providing rides without obtaining the required permissions from the local government.
As Goa remains a prominent tourist destination in India, the government's vigilance in monitoring unauthorized ride-hailing services aims to ensure compliance with transportation regulations and safeguard the interests of the local transport industry.
The case highlights the importance of app-based taxi aggregators adhering to local laws and regulations, serving as a cautionary reminder for other companies in the industry. The situation will undoubtedly unfold as Uber responds to the police complaint and the legal proceedings progress.
