At the age of 55, former Surrey and England cricketer Graham Thorpe passed away on August 5. In an official announcement, Surrey Cricket and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed his passing. Since 2022, Thorpe has been hospitalized due to a serious illness, and at the time, his future was unknown.

Thorpe was a left-handed hitter who played 13 years of highly competitive international cricket. In 182 games, 82 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 100 test matches, he played for England. Beyond his playing career, he continued to contribute to cricket by coaching England's senior men's team's batting unit and passing on his knowledge and experience to the upcoming players.

Thorpe's career started with a remarkable century at Trent Bridge during his Ashes match debut in 1993. His career saw him gain 6,744 runs in Test cricket, including 16 hundred, thanks to this outstanding start. He scored 2,380 runs in ODIs, demonstrating his adaptability and talent in many game types. Throughout his career, he was an important member of the England team due to his ability to produce at the highest level regularly.

Apart from his global achievements, Thorpe had an outstanding career with Surrey at the county level. He scored an incredible 21,937 runs in first-class cricket during his period with the club, including 49 hundred and keeping an average of 45.04. His contributions to Surrey confirmed his place among the club's all-time legends.

The Surrey Cricket Club's chair, Oli Slipper, expressed the club's deep sadness at Thorpe's passing away. "There is a great deal of sadness that Graham will never again be able to enter the Oval as one of Surrey's great sons," Slipper remarked. He will be much missed for his exceptional cricketing and personal contributions to the club.

Thorpe's remarkable talent and commitment to the game will always be associated with cricket. The cricketing world has lost a wonderful person with him, and we will always remember and value the things he did for Surrey and England.
