🗣️ Hughes Takes Aim at Taylor Over Leadership Ambitions
Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes has sparked controversy just days before the party’s leadership vote, accusing fellow Liberal Angus Taylor of trying to remove Peter Dutton during the federal election campaign.
Hughes, who lost her Senate preselection battle, believes Taylor was “already in the stages of a coup” against Dutton and was more focused on personal ambition than party unity.
"They’re planning to topple Dutton whether he won his seat or not...
It beggars belief that people like this think they can now run for leadership,” she said on Sky News.
🔥 Ongoing Friction After Preselection Loss
Hughes has been critical of Taylor ever since her defeat in the internal party preselection. She believes he played a key role in ensuring her loss and has since escalated her criticisms of his performance and ambitions.
Despite her disappointment, she reaffirmed her support for Dutton:
“I remain incredibly supportive of Dutton... I’ve done everything I could to support the Liberal Party.”
❌ Angus Taylor Strongly Denies Allegations
Taylor, who has officially entered the leadership race alongside National Party defector Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, responded swiftly to the allegations through a spokesperson:
“These claims are false and frankly low.”
He maintains that his focus remains on strengthening the party and building a strong leadership team post-election.
🗳️ Liberal Party at a Crossroads
The accusation has added further drama to an already tense lead-up to the Liberal leadership vote, which is expected to reshape the party’s future direction.
As internal divisions surface, the party faces a challenging road ahead in regaining public confidence following its heavy election defeat to Labor.
