According to the White House National Security Council, President Biden was briefed on the attack and asked the Pentagon to prepare reaction options against those involved. The operations, according to General Michael Erik Kurilla, director of US Central Command, were designed to weaken the insurgents' ability to carry out future attacks.

The retaliatory strikes are estimated to have killed Kataib Hezbollah militants and destroyed various facilities used by the group. The Pentagon did not reveal the identity of the seriously injured military member or share specifics about his or her injury.

The drone assault was carried out against a military base in northern Iraq that we and anti-jihadist coalition forces used. Yehia Rasool, the Iraqi prime minister's spokesman for military affairs, confirmed the event near Erbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan. Shortly after the strike, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed credit for flying a drone into another US and coalition base near Harir, northeast of Arbil.

The Iraqi Islamic Resistance is a loosely linked coalition of armed organizations affiliated with the Hashed al-Shaabi coalition that is integrated into Iraq's conventional armed forces. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, the number of strikes on the US and its alliance has escalated. These militia attacks against US troops can be interpreted as reprisal by the forces to the US's backing for Israel in the war.
