In response to the worsening situation in Syria, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid traveling to the war-torn country. The MEA also recommended that those currently in Syria depart immediately, if possible, citing increasing safety concerns.
"In view of the situation prevailing in Syria, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all travel to Syria until further notification," stated the MEA. "Those who can are advised to leave by the earliest available commercial flights, while others are requested to exercise utmost caution, prioritize their safety, and minimize their movements."
The advisory also urged Indian nationals in Syria to maintain contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus. A dedicated helpline number, +963 993385973, has been provided for assistance, ensuring that citizens can reach out for support in these perilous times.
Currently, around 90 Indian nationals are known to be in Syria, including 14 individuals working with United Nations organizations. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reassured the public that the Indian mission in Syria is closely monitoring the situation. "We are following the developments closely. Our mission remains in constant communication with Indian nationals to prioritize their safety and security," Jaiswal stated.

The advisory comes as violence in Syria has intensified. Rebel groups have ramped up attacks, with recent offensives resulting in the seizure of Hama and a push toward Homs, further destabilizing the region. This resurgence of hostilities is heightening the risk of further territorial divisions under President Bashar al-Assad's control.
The Syrian civil war, which erupted in 2011, has claimed over 300,000 civilian lives, according to United Nations estimates. The conflict has also caused widespread displacement, with millions of people fleeing to neighboring countries in search of refuge.
As tensions rise, the Indian government has emphasized the importance of safety, urging its citizens to heed the advisory and take necessary precautions to ensure their well-being in the volatile environment. The MEA continues to closely track the situation and provide assistance to Indian nationals caught in the conflict.
