In a significant move aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing, India has imposed immediate restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers. According to a government notice released on Thursday, "Their import would be allowed against a valid license for restricted imports.”

During the April-June quarter, electronics imports, including laptops, tablets, and personal computers, surged to $19.7 billion, marking a 6.25% year-on-year increase. These imports constitute a substantial portion, ranging from 7% to 10%, of India's total merchandise imports. The new restrictions signal a clear intention to encourage domestic manufacturing within the country.

Ali Akhtar Jafri, former director general of the electronics industry body MAIT stated "The move's spirit is to push manufacturing to India. It's not a nudge, it's a push."  India has been actively promoting local manufacturing through production-linked incentives across more than two dozen sectors, with electronics being a key focus.

To attract major investments in IT hardware manufacturing, India has extended the deadline for companies to apply for its $2 billion manufacturing incentive scheme. This scheme covers a range of products, including laptops, tablets, personal computers, and servers. The success of this incentive program is crucial to India's ambitious goal of achieving $300 billion in annual electronics production by 2026.

Also, prominent international companies such as Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG Electronics, Apple Inc, Lenovo, and HP Inc play a significant role in the Indian laptop market. A substantial portion of laptops sold in India are imported, often from countries like China.
