In a significant shift for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), its Chandrayaan-3 mission's moon landing garnered a record-breaking 8 million viewers on YouTube, signaling a broader effort to reshape the agency's image and approach. According to numerous insiders, including current and former employees, as well as industry experts, ISRO is shedding its historically secretive and closed-off culture in favor of transparency and engagement.
Namrata Goswami, a space policy expert, noted that ISRO's past was marked by secrecy, but the agency has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming more open in 2023. This transformation is part of a strategic move to tap into the rapidly growing global commercial space market, which is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2030. Currently holding only a 2% share of this market at around $8 billion, India has ambitious plans to secure a $40 billion slice by 2040.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon ISRO to transform India into a profitable space superpower, a goal that necessitates collaboration with young scientists, startups, investors, and private industry partners. To attract these stakeholders, ISRO has shifted its approach to be more welcoming and transparent.
BHM Darukesha, responsible for managing ISRO's social media presence, emphasized the importance of portraying ISRO as a friendly and open organization. This shift has piqued the interest of students like Sruthi Parupudi, who is now considering a career with ISRO as an interaction design student.
The catalyst for these changes is attributed to S. Somanath, who assumed the role of chairman in 2022. Despite initial concerns among some scientists about job security and ISRO's relevance in the face of private industry involvement, Somanath's leadership has gradually won them over. He introduced various small changes, such as promoting breaks, informal discussions, and refreshment kiosks, to make ISRO a more appealing workplace and partner for collaboration.
ISRO's openness has empowered employees, accelerated project timelines, and attracted space startups. Private industry leaders appreciate ISRO's responsiveness, emphasizing predictability for successful partnerships. India's determination to dominate the global space market.
