Frisco Teen Released on Bond After Fatal Stabbing at Track Meet
A 17-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing another teen during a school track meet in Frisco, Texas, has been released from jail after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $250,000.
Karmelo Anthony, who was charged in the death of fellow student Austin Metcalf, is now under house arrest and must wear an ankle monitor.
The incident occurred on April 2, 2025, when an argument between the two teens reportedly escalated. According to witnesses, the altercation ended when Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf later died from his injuries.
Teen's Defense Hints at Self-Defense Claim
Following his release on April 14, Anthony’s defense attorney, Mike Howard, said the teen would likely argue self-defense at trial.
“Every Texan has the right to defend themselves when they fear for their life,” Howard told reporters.
“This is a tragedy for both families. Karmelo is a good student, the captain of his football and track teams, and just 17 years old.”
Police reports indicate that Anthony cooperated with officers after the incident and asked if Metcalf would survive and whether his actions would be considered self-defense.
Judge Lowers Bond After Family Plea
At a hearing in Collin County, Anthony’s father testified that he was the sole provider and could not afford the original $1 million bond. He also shared that Anthony is an A-grade student and team captain in school sports.
Defense lawyers revealed the family had raised $412,000 through donations, but the funds were being used to cover legal bills, household expenses, and security for the family’s younger children.
“This family has been under a lot of pressure,” said Howard. “Security and legal defense are not cheap.”
Despite prosecutors opposing the bond reduction, the judge sided with the defense, allowing Anthony’s release under strict house arrest conditions.

Prosecutors referenced an earlier alleged assault case involving Anthony from February 4, questioning his father about it in court. No details were provided during the hearing, and the defense did not address the case.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said the case had stirred strong emotions in the local community but emphasized the need for a calm and fact-based investigation.
