North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, recently watched the first test-firings of missiles from the country’s newly launched destroyer, marking a significant step in strengthening the nation's naval capabilities. This destroyer, the first of its kind for North Korea, is seen as a critical asset in boosting the country’s ability to carry out nuclear attacks from the sea.
A Historic Launch for North Korea’s Navy
On Friday, North Korea revealed its new 5,000-ton destroyer during a ceremony at the Nampo port. Kim Jong Un hailed the ship’s construction as a major advancement in modernizing the country's naval forces. Experts suggest that the destroyer was likely built with assistance from Russia, a country with which North Korea has strengthened military ties in recent years. While North Korea’s navy is not as advanced as South Korea's, experts recognize this destroyer as a significant security concern due to its potential to enhance both offense and defense capabilities.
Test-Firings and Future Developments
During a recent test, Kim observed the destroyer’s launch of various weapons, including supersonic and strategic cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, automatic guns, and electronic jamming systems. The official Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim praised the destroyer’s combination of powerful offensive weapons and defensive systems. He also emphasized the need to expedite efforts to arm the navy with nuclear capabilities.
In his address, Kim revealed that the destroyer would be deployed by early next year, and he outlined plans to acquire a nuclear-powered submarine next. These developments are seen as part of his broader strategy to strengthen North Korea’s deterrence against perceived threats, particularly from the U.S. and its allies.
Collaborations with Russia and Strategic Concerns
Experts point out that certain components of the destroyer, such as its anti-air radar system and engine, are likely sourced from Russia. The two countries have increased military cooperation, with North Korea providing support to Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. In exchange, Russia is expected to assist North Korea with advanced military technologies that could enhance its nuclear program.
Despite North Korea’s military advancements, South Korea’s navy remains significantly more powerful, with 12 destroyers in service. However, the North Korean destroyer, which can carry up to 80 missiles, represents a serious threat, especially as South Korea’s navy may not yet be prepared to counter such an advanced warship.
Heightened Tensions on the Korean Peninsula
The tensions between North and South Korea continue to rise, fueled by ongoing missile and weapons tests. This week, North Korea confirmed it had sent combat troops to Russia to assist with the war in Ukraine, a move that prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to express gratitude. The ongoing arms cooperation between Russia and North Korea raises concerns about the further escalation of the arms race on the Korean Peninsula.
