The Unthinkable in Kocani: A Nightclub Fire Leaves a Nation in Mourning
I still can’t quite believe what happened in Kocani, North Macedonia. On March 16th, 2025, a fire ripped through Club Pulse during a hip-hop concert, taking the lives of at least 59 young people. Fifty-nine. It’s a number that just hangs in the air, heavy and unbearable. The whole country is in shock, a deep, gut-wrenching kind of shock.
It happened so fast. Apparently, something went wrong with the pyrotechnics on stage. Then, everything went wrong. The club was massively overcrowded – at least double its capacity, they say – and there was only one exit. You know how sometimes things just spiral? This was one of those times. Panic erupted, a terrible, chaotic stampede ensued. Many died from burns, smoke inhalation, or were trampled in the crush. The youngest victims were only sixteen.
The images from that night…I can’t even begin to describe them. Parents frantically searching for their children in hospitals across the country, even in Greece, where some of the most seriously injured were sent for treatment. It’s a scene that’s seared itself into my memory, a nightmare you can’t wake up from.
The Aftermath: Anger, Grief, and a Demand for Justice
Fifteen people are in custody, suspected of bribery and corruption related to the club’s operation. Apparently, it wasn’t even properly licensed. Honestly, who saw that coming? Seven days of national mourning have been declared. President Gordana Davkova Siljanovska and Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski have both spoken, expressing their grief and vowing to hold those responsible accountable. There's a huge amount of anger, understandably. People want answers, and they want justice for the victims.
Following the tragedy, there’s been a nationwide inspection of every nightclub and cabaret. It’s a desperate attempt to prevent another catastrophe, another night of unimaginable horror. International condolences have poured in – it’s a tragedy that resonated far beyond North Macedonia’s borders.
