Incident Overview
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse was stolen while she was dining with her family at Capital Burger, a well-known restaurant in downtown Washington, DC, on Sunday evening.
According to reports shared with CNN, the stolen handbag contained around $3,000 (over ₹2.5 lakh) in cash, along with her Department of Homeland Security (DHS) badge, passport, driver’s license, personal items, and apartment keys.
What Happened at the Restaurant
Eyewitnesses told CNN that Ms Noem was having dinner with her family when an unidentified man entered the restaurant around 7:55 PM. CCTV footage reportedly shows the man wearing a surgical mask, sitting near her table, and gradually shifting his chair closer.
He then discreetly used his foot to drag the purse towards himself. Moments later, he picked it up, hid it under his jacket, and calmly walked out of the restaurant.
What the Secret Service Is Doing
The Secret Service, which is responsible for Ms Noem’s protection, has reviewed surveillance video from the restaurant. They are now actively investigating the incident to determine whether any of her financial assets or sensitive items have been misused.
Why Was So Much Cash in the Bag?
When asked about the large amount of money, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin explained that Ms Noem had withdrawn the cash to treat her family. “Her entire family, including children and grandchildren, was in town for dinner, Easter gifts, and holiday activities,” she said.
Kristi Noem’s Response
Ms Noem declined to speak in detail about the incident during Monday's White House Easter Egg Roll. “I don’t think I can comment on it yet. It’s not resolved,” she told reporters.
