Mike Wood, Founder of LeapFrog, Dies at 72 Following Alzheimer’s Battle
Mike Wood, the pioneering mind behind LeapFrog Enterprises, passed away on April 10, 2025, at the age of 72. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and, in a brave and deeply personal decision, opted for physician-assisted death at Dignitas, a legal euthanasia clinic in Zurich, Switzerland. His brother, Tim Wood, confirmed the peaceful passing, which occurred in the presence of loved ones.
A Vision Sparked by Fatherhood
Mike Wood’s journey into educational technology started in the early 1990s, born from a desire to help his young son learn to read. Dissatisfied with traditional learning tools, Wood developed a device called the Phonics Desk, a foundation that soon evolved into something revolutionary.
In 1995, Wood founded LeapFrog Enterprises, a company that would change how children interacted with educational content. By 1999, LeapFrog launched the LeapPad, an interactive learning tablet that quickly became a household staple and was hailed as one of the most effective early learning tools of its time.
Life After LeapFrog: Continuing His Educational Mission
Although Wood stepped down from LeapFrog in 2004, his dedication to children's learning never waned. He founded SmartyAnts, an online platform focusing on literacy development, especially among young learners.
Wood also volunteered in underprivileged communities, working as a reading mentor to struggling students—showcasing not just his innovative spirit, but his compassion and commitment to educational equity.
