In a recent social media incident, Mariyam Shiuna, the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, made derogatory comments targeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The now-deleted post included disrespectful language likening India to cow dung and labeling PM Modi as a 'clown' and 'puppet' following his visit to Lakshadweep.

The Maldivian government swiftly distanced itself from Shiuna's remarks, asserting in an official statement that such opinions expressed on social media platforms are personal and do not represent the official position of the Maldivian administration. The statement emphasized the importance of exercising freedom of expression responsibly without inciting negativity or harming international relationships.

It was made clear that the government stands for the democratic exercise of freedom of expression but will take action against those making derogatory remarks. Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed strongly condemned Shiuna's language, highlighting the significance of maintaining diplomatic respect between nations. Similarly, ex-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih expressed condemnation over the use of hateful language against India, emphasizing the longstanding friendship between the countries.

The incident has attracted attention not only from diplomatic circles but also from Indian celebrities. Actor Akshay Kumar expressed surprise and disappointment at the offensive comments, advocating support for domestic tourism in India. 

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar shared his memories of celebrating his 50th birthday at Sindhudurg, promoting the beauty of Indian coastlines and islands and urging people to explore them.
