On Thursday, February 13, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Munich, Germany, where a car drove into a crowd during a demonstration, resulting in at least 28 injuries, including children. The event took place around 10:30 AM near the central train station, specifically at the intersection of Dachauer Straße and Seidlstraße.

Details of the Incident

The demonstration was organized by the Verdi trade union, with city workers rallying for better pay and working conditions. According to eyewitnesses, a white Mini Cooper approached the crowd from behind, maneuvered around a police vehicle that was escorting the march, and then accelerated into the demonstrators. The driver, identified as a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker with prior records of drug and theft offenses, was apprehended at the scene after police fired at the vehicle to subdue him.

Bavarian Governor Markus Söder stated that the incident is "presumed to be an attack," emphasizing the severity of the situation. Munich's Mayor, Dieter Reiter, expressed deep shock, noting that "many people have been injured, including children."

This incident occurred just one day before the Munich Security Conference, an annual event attracting global leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While authorities do not currently believe there is a direct connection between the attack and the conference, security measures in the city have been heightened.

The attack has also reignited discussions on immigration and security policies in Germany, especially with the upcoming federal elections where such topics are pivotal. Governor Söder remarked, "It's not the first case and who knows what else will happen. This makes it all the more important that... we also show the determination that something has to change in Germany."
