At least 25 people have lost their lives after two massive earthquakes struck Myanmar on Friday. The first quake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, hit at around 11:50 AM local time, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock just 12 minutes later.

The epicenter of the first earthquake was located near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which has a population of about 1.5 million. The second quake was recorded 18 km south of Sagaing.

Widespread Damage and Panic

Buildings collapsed in Mandalay, and streets were filled with debris. Social media videos showed people running in panic, and several structures were severely damaged.

Strong tremors were also felt in neighboring countries, including Thailand and Vietnam. In Bangkok, high-rise buildings shook violently, and water spilled from swimming pools. Reports suggest an under-construction building collapsed in the Chatuchak district, and Thailand’s BTS Skytrain suspended its services.

Meanwhile, in Vietnam, people in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City rushed out of buildings as lights and furniture swayed due to the tremors.

Tsunami Warning Issued

Chinese authorities issued a tsunami warning, urging coastal regions to stay alert. However, there are no confirmed reports of a tsunami so far.

Government Response

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra immediately called for an emergency meeting to assess the situation, while stock and futures exchanges in Bangkok temporarily halted trading.

Rescue teams have been deployed in Myanmar to assist affected areas. Authorities warn of possible aftershocks and advise people to remain cautious.
