The controversy surrounding the June 18 murder of Khalistan Tiger Force commander Hardeep Singh Nijjar serves as the context for this action. Joly declared that Ottawa won't retaliate in any way.

Although Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed there was "credible" evidence of a probable connection between the Indian government and Nijjar's slaying, India requested last month that Ottawa downsize its diplomatic presence in the nation.
Joly claimed that if the diplomats did not depart by Friday, India would unilaterally terminate their official status. She said that this action was "unreasonable," unheard of, and obviously in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

We have supported our diplomats' safe departure from India given the effects of India's actions on their safety, she said at a press conference.
"No diplomat on the earth would be secure if we allowed the rule of diplomatic immunity to be breached. We won't repay because of this, she remarked.

India currently hosts 21 Canadian diplomats. 42 dependents accompanied the 41 who departed.
Indian officials have dismissed as ludicrous Trudeau's claims that their operatives were involved in the killing of Nijjar, a Canadian national whom New Delhi had designated as a "terrorist," who was a citizen of India.

5% of all Canadians, or about 2 million people, are of Indian ancestry. Almost 40% of those with study permits come from India, which is by far the greatest source of international students in Canada.

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Marc Miller, has mentioned that the departure of diplomats will lead to a decrease in the immigration-related embassy staff. During his press conference, he acknowledged the concerns and apprehensions that this situation might cause among clients, families, educational institutions, communities, and businesses across Canada.

He reassured that the operation of visa application centers in India managed by independent contractors will remain unaffected.
