External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar revealed that 87,026 Indians have renounced their citizenship till June 2023, with over 17.50 lakh people giving up Indian citizenship since 2011. The United States emerged as a prominent destination for many. The Government is taking active measures to improve engagement with the diaspora.

According to a statement made by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in the Lok Sabha, a significant number of Indians have chosen to renounce their citizenship, reaching a total of 87,026 until June of the current year. 

Recognizing the importance of the Indian community residing abroad, Minister Jaishankar emphasized that the government has been actively revamping its approach to engaging with the diaspora

The minister said, "The number of Indian nationals exploring the global workplace has been significant in the last two decades. Many of them have chosen to take up foreign citizenship for reasons of personal convenience.". 

Over the past two decades, many Indian nationals have sought opportunities in the global workforce, leading many to embrace foreign citizenship for various reasons. Among the destinations, the United States has emerged as a prominent choice, with a staggering 7,88,284 Indians renouncing their citizenship in 2021 alone, continuing their pursuit of the "American dream."

Since 2011, more than 17.50 lakh individuals have given up their Indian citizenship, as confirmed by the minister in a written reply. The data reveals a consistent trend of Indians opting for foreign citizenship for personal convenience, with a certain number selecting the United States as their preferred destination.
