The economic crisis in the South Asian countries is getting worse, as now, Pakistan seems to be getting the short end of the stick known as Inflation.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority(NEPRA) of Pakistan has increased tariffs for electricity consumption across the country.
Consequently, the Pakistani citizens have to now pay an additional Rs 4.8 per unit for their electricity consumption.
This move comes amidst already rising inflation in Pakistan.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has passed regulations to allow power companies to increase tariffs and charge consumers more.
It should be noted that Pakistan's Former prime minister Imran Khan recently lost his power after losing a no-confidence vote on the very issues of inflation and the worsening economic situation of the country.
And now the hike in the Power Tariff on account of fuel cost adjustment (FCA) comes as a back-breaker for the average Pakistani citizen.
The raised prices will be effective for any electricity consumption since February 2022.
The increase in Tariff was initiated by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) requesting the power regulator to allow an increase of Rs 4.9441 per unit to burden the power consumers with an impact of Rs 38.4 billion.
Consequently, NEPRA conducted a public hearing on March 31, during which an increase of Rs 4.8530 per unit instead of Rs4.9441 per unit was approved. The hike in electricity prices will put an additional burden of around Rs 37.7 billion on power consumers.
Power outages in Pakistan continue to make the situation worse
Amidst the rising inflation, economic crisis, and hike in Power tariffs, the Pakistani citizen also has to be burdened by the persistent issue of Load shedding in Karachi.
Even after assuring claims from the government regarding the issue, the city of Karachi still remains in dark.
Areas of Karachi like the Korangi, Landhi, Railway Colony, Nusrat Bhutto Colony, Khawaja Ajmair Nagri, Paposh Nagar, Liaquat Market, Malir, Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block-2, Korangi Sector 30, 31, etc have all been affected by the power outage.
The situation descended down to the extent, that people had to perform Taraweeh prayers during Ramzan in sheer darkness due to power cuts.
