Pakistan Breaks Ceasefire at LoC; Indian Army JCO Killed in Akhnoor
Indian Soldier Martyred During Gunbattle in Akhnoor Sector
A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) from the Indian Army was killed late Friday night during a gunfight near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Akhnoor sector. The clash took place in the Keri Bhattal area, where a group of terrorists attempted to cross the border from Pakistan into Indian territory.
According to army sources, the soldiers noticed suspicious movement near a stream in a forested zone. When they challenged the infiltrators, they were met with heavy gunfire. The JCO was hit during the exchange of fire and later died from his injuries.
Ceasefire Violation Follows Border Talks
This latest infiltration attempt is being viewed as a violation of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. Notably, the incident occurred just hours after high-level talks between brigade commanders from both sides, aimed at easing border tensions. The meeting took place at the Chakan Da Bagh crossing point in Poonch district.
Despite the ceasefire pact reaffirmed in February 2021, this event highlights how fragile the agreement still is.
Search Operations Continue in Forest Area
Following the encounter, the Indian Army launched a major search operation to find and neutralize any remaining terrorists in the region. Troops have been combing the dense forest near the border, where the infiltrators were last seen.
Additional forces were sent in to assist with the operation. The Indian Army remains on high alert across the Jammu region to prevent any further infiltration attempts.
Separate Operation in Kishtwar: Three Terrorists Killed
In another significant development, three Pakistani terrorists were killed in a joint operation carried out by the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police in the Kishtwar district.
The anti-terror operation began on April 9 based on intelligence inputs suggesting militant movement in the Chhatru forest area. Despite challenging terrain and poor weather, security forces tracked down and eliminated the terrorists after a fierce gunfight.
Weapons recovered from the site included an AK-series rifle and an M4 carbine, among other arms and supplies.
Ongoing Challenges Along the LoC
These back-to-back incidents underline the ongoing security challenges along the LoC. While both countries had agreed to observe a ceasefire, incidents like these show the constant threat posed by infiltration attempts and cross-border terrorism.
The Indian Army continues to take a strong stance against any such attempts, staying prepared to defend the nation's borders.
