Renowned singer-songwriter Paul McCartney recently revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) has played a pivotal role in creating a "pure" rendition of John Lennon's voice for an upcoming Beatles song. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, McCartney shared the exciting news of the band's reunion, facilitated by the aid of AI technology.
The Beatles, a highly influential British rock band, enlisted the support of AI to extract and refine John Lennon's vocals for what McCartney referred to as their "final" song. McCartney expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We were able to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI."
The foundation for this extraordinary endeavor lies in a demo recording that Lennon had crafted before his untimely demise in 1980. A cassette tape labeled "For Paul," a gift from Yoko Ono to McCartney, held the cherished demo. McCartney revealed that they have meticulously "finished it up" and plan to release the song later this year.
The inspiration for employing AI in this unique project stemmed from Peter Jackson's documentary series, The Beatles: Get Back, which chronicles the making of the iconic album, Let It Be. The technology was initially used to create surround-sound mixes for the Beatles' Revolver album.
Describing the process, McCartney explained that Jackson successfully extracted Lennon's voice from a subpar cassette recording. By leveraging AI, the team was able to discern specific audio elements, such as Lennon's voice and piano, and separate them accordingly. The AI algorithms, trained to recognize distinct musical components, enabled them to isolate Lennon's vocals and remove any accompanying instrumentals, such as the guitar.
McCartney emphasized the freedom that this technological breakthrough afforded them, stating, "We were able to use the technology to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI. Then we can mix the record, as you would normally do. So it gives you some sort of leeway."
This unprecedented use of AI in music production not only allows for the resurrection of Lennon's distinctive voice but also provides a glimpse into the creative possibilities that arise when technology collaborates with artistic vision. As fans eagerly await the release of this final Beatles song, the music industry continues to witness the impact of AI on pushing the boundaries of innovation and artistic expression
