The World Mourns Pope Francis: What Happens Now?
Wow. Just… wow. The news of Pope Francis’s passing on April 21st, 2025, at the age of 88, really hit hard, didn’t it? It feels surreal, honestly. A huge figure like that, gone. But his death sets off a whole chain of events, the biggest being the election of his successor. And that’s what everyone’s talking about: the Conclave. When does it start?
The Countdown Begins: When's the Conclave?
According to Vatican protocol, the Conclave – that’s the super-secret meeting of cardinals to pick the new Pope – happens between 15 and 20 days after the Pope’s death. So we’re looking at sometime between May 6th and May 11th, 2025. That gives the eligible cardinals (those under 80) time to get to Rome. There are 138 of them, ready to make history.
The Camerlengo Takes the Reins
Until a new Pope is chosen, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo (which is basically the Vatican’s temporary CEO), is in charge. He’s handling everything from the funeral arrangements to prepping for the Conclave. The word “Conclave” itself comes from the Latin “cum clave,” meaning “with key.” Pretty fitting, considering the whole locked-room aspect of the election process back in the day.
A Peek Behind the Curtains of the Conclave
The Conclave is serious business. The cardinals take a massive oath, then it’s ballots, ballots, ballots. Black smoke means no decision yet; white smoke? We’ve got a new Pope! The announcement – that incredible “Habemus Papam!” (We have a Pope!) – will come from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, delivered by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti. Then the new Pope appears, tells us his papal name, and gives the Urbi et Orbi blessing. It’s quite the spectacle.
Remembering a Legacy
Pope Francis’s legacy is undeniable. He was known for his focus on social justice, his willingness to engage in interfaith dialogue, and, honestly, his down-to-earth style. He connected with so many people worldwide. His passing marks a huge shift for the Catholic Church, and the Conclave is going to be watched closely by the whole world. Everyone's wondering, who will be next?
What the Future Holds
The next few weeks are going to be intense. Cardinals are heading to Rome, praying and contemplating the future of the Catholic Church. The world holds its breath, waiting to see who becomes the 267th sovereign pontiff. It's a momentous occasion, full of both sadness and anticipation.
