Ceasefire Falls Apart Days After U.S. Envoy's Visit
A temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, arranged with help from a U.S. envoy, is already under strain. Just days after Steve Witkoff, a special envoy from the United States, left Moscow, both countries are accusing each other of breaking the agreement.
The ceasefire, which was supposed to last for 30 days, was meant to stop attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine. But as of now, neither side seems committed to the truce.
Confusion Over Start Time of Ceasefire
One of the first problems with the ceasefire was confusion over when it actually started. Russia and Ukraine gave different statements about the beginning of the pause, which led to both sides continuing their military actions.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Ukrainian forces kept attacking nearly every day. On the other hand, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha claimed that Russia had launched thousands of drone and missile attacks since the ceasefire began.
These accusations were exchanged during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey.
Ukraine Reports Loss of F-16 Fighter Jet
Ukraine confirmed that one of its Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets was shot down during a Russian missile strike. The pilot died in the attack, and this marks the second F-16 Ukraine has lost in recent weeks. The news comes as Russia continues to carry out drone strikes, especially targeting southern areas like the Kherson region.
Several civilians were also killed in Kherson due to Russian drone attacks, adding to the growing number of casualties since the war began.
U.S. Criticizes Russia’s Lack of Progress
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration with Russia's unwillingness to stick to the ceasefire. He urged Moscow to take more serious steps to end the conflict. Washington had hoped the pause would allow for diplomatic talks and reduce the number of attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
So far, those hopes have not materialized.
Peace Talks Still Seem Far Away
The events following the failed ceasefire show how hard it is to reach peace in the ongoing war. With both sides blaming each other and violence continuing, the chances of any long-term truce remain slim. The U.S. and other international players are likely to keep pushing for dialogue, but progress remains slow.
