A Russian military aircraft, transporting 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, crashed as it returned to its airfield in the Belgorod Region on Wednesday, according to state media citing the defense ministry.
The incident occurred at 11 am local time, and the cause of the crash is yet to be determined. The defense ministry stated that a special military commission was en route to investigate the crash. A video shared on social media depicted the plane crashing near the village of Yablonovo, followed by an explosion.
The defense ministry reported, "On board were 65 captured Ukrainian army servicemen being transported to the Belgorod region for exchange, six crew members, and three escorts." Simultaneously, Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia's lower house of parliament, accused Kyiv of shooting down the plane, alleging that Ukrainian forces targeted their soldiers during a humanitarian mission.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, earlier in the day, disclosed a significant Russian missile attack aimed at overwhelming Ukraine's air defenses, resulting in the loss of 18 lives. This incident occurred on the 700th day since the onset of the full-scale invasion by Kremlin forces.
