Russian Missile Hits Ukrainian City During Religious Holiday
On Sunday, April 13, 2025, a Russian missile hit the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, causing massive destruction and loss of life. The attack took place in the late morning as people gathered for Palm Sunday services. At least 34 civilians were killed, and more than 117 people were injured, including children.

Ukraine denied this, stating that the strike hit a public university area and a city transport system used by civilians. Photos and videos from the site showed destroyed buildings, burning vehicles, and wounded people lying in the streets.
International Outrage and Condemnation
The attack has sparked global outrage. Leaders from the European Union, United States, and NATO condemned the missile strike, calling it a potential war crime. Many officials stressed that targeting civilians is a violation of international law.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the strike “a shocking and brutal act” and promised continued support for Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed the sentiment, demanding stronger sanctions against Russia.
Human rights organizations are now pushing for international investigations into Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukrainian civilians.
The Human Toll and the Urgent Call for Defense Aid
Among the 117 people injured, 15 were children, highlighting the wide-reaching human cost of the attack. Hospitals in Sumy quickly became overwhelmed, with emergency rooms filled beyond capacity.
Ukrainian officials say this latest attack underscores the urgent need for more advanced air defense systems. They continue to request assistance from Western allies, including missile interception technology.
