A Night of Music, Then Disaster
I still can’t believe what happened in Santo Domingo. One minute, it was a huge Merengue concert – everyone was having a blast, you know? Rubby Pérez was on stage, the place was packed… then, boom. The roof of the Jet Set nightclub just…collapsed. It happened on April 4th, 2025, and it’s a tragedy that’s left the whole country reeling.
At least 98 people are dead. Over 150 more are injured. Honestly, who saw that coming? It’s heartbreaking. I keep thinking about those families.
A Horrific Scene
Eyewitnesses described absolute chaos. One woman, Iris Peña, told SIN television it started with dust falling from the ceiling. Then, a huge chunk of the roof just came crashing down. “It was like a tsunami,” she said. Can you even imagine? Enrique Paulino, Rubby Pérez’s manager, said it all happened so fast. He thought it was an earthquake.
The worst part? Rubby Pérez himself was killed. So was Dominican baseball player Octavio Dotel, and the governor of Monte Cristi, Nelsy Cruz. It’s just…unbelievable. So many lives lost.
The Aftermath: Rescue and Grief
Hundreds of rescue workers rushed to the scene, using thermal imaging cameras and a crane to search for survivors. Hospitals were overflowing with the injured. I’ve seen the pictures – it was total devastation. Imagine the panic, the fear. President Luis Abinader visited the site, offering condolences and pledging support. The nightclub released a statement saying they’d cooperate fully with the investigation.
The numbers are still uncertain. Estimates of how many people were in the club range from 500 to 1,000. It’s just a nightmare. So many unanswered questions.
What Went Wrong?
Right now, investigations are underway to find out exactly what caused the roof to collapse. Was it poor construction? Neglect? I don’t know. But this tragedy highlights something really important: we need stricter building codes and safety inspections, especially in places that hold large crowds. The Dominican Republic is a popular tourist destination, known for its amazing nightlife. This accident casts a dark shadow over everything.
