Zhenhao Zou: A Predatory Sexual Offender
Zhenhao Zou, a 28-year-old former Queen’s University and University College London student, has been convicted of drugging and raping ten women in London and China between 2019 and 2023. This shocking case has sent ripples through the UK, with police fearing potentially 50 more victims remain unidentified.
A Pattern of Abuse
Zou, who used the online alias "Pakho," targeted fellow Chinese students through WeChat and dating apps. He'd invite them for drinks, drug them with substances like butanediol, and then rape them, often filming the assaults as "souvenirs." He also kept a "trophy box" of belongings stolen from his victims. The court heard harrowing testimonies from two identified victims, who described being incapacitated and assaulted after being plied with excessive alcohol and drugs. Nine of the rapes were filmed, with footage shown during the trial causing visible distress among jurors.
International Investigation and Appeal
The Metropolitan Police launched an international appeal for additional victims, noting that many may be unaware they were assaulted due to the use of incapacitating drugs. They are collaborating with Chinese authorities to reach potential victims through platforms like WeChat and Little Red Book. Commander Kevin Southworth expressed concern that Zou may be one of the UK's most prolific sexual predators. The investigation highlights the challenges of cross-border investigations involving digital evidence and language barriers. The conviction underscores the bravery of the two identified victims who came forward to testify.
The Aftermath and Warnings
Zou was found guilty of 11 counts of rape, along with charges of voyeurism, false imprisonment, and possession of extreme pornography and controlled drugs. He faces a lengthy prison sentence. This case serves as a stark warning about the dangers of online dating and the importance of vigilance. The sheer scale of Zou’s crimes highlights the need for improved awareness, support for victims, and international cooperation in tackling such crimes.
Call to Action
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Zhenhao Zou is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police via email at survivors@met.police.uk or through their major incident public portal. The bravery of those who have already come forward should encourage others to seek justice.
