US and Chinese officials have agreed to work towards an anticipated summit between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping next month. This marks the first visit by a Chinese foreign minister to the US since 2018, and seasoned diplomat Wang Yi held an hour-long discussion with President Biden. The meetings, spanning two days, lasted for nine hours and were characterized as candid and in-depth exchanges by US officials.

The Biden administration views direct engagement with President Xi as a crucial strategy for managing tensions and preventing the deterioration of U.S.-China relations. Wang emphasized China's commitment to stabilizing and improving ties with the U.S., in line with American expectations.

Wang's three-day visit comes in the wake of numerous diplomatic engagements between the U.S. and China in recent months, primarily initiated by the U.S. to salvage their rapidly deteriorating relationship. Critics have raised questions about whether the series of one-sided U.S. cabinet-level visits to Beijing might play into Beijing's hands.

Yellen and Raimondo's visits led to the establishment of new bilateral economic and commercial working groups, which critics fear might divert U.S. attention away from actions such as sanctions, export controls, and broader measures aimed at strengthening U.S. competition with China. U.S. officials maintain that increased diplomacy does not signify a change in policy direction.
