VE Day 80th Anniversary: Let's Celebrate!

Can you believe it's been eighty years since the end of World War II in Europe? It's a huge milestone, and the UK is pulling out all the stops to commemorate VE Day's 80th anniversary. We're talking military processions, flypasts that'll leave you speechless, poignant poppy displays…the whole shebang. It's going to be a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the peace we fought so hard to win. But if you want to get involved in the local celebrations, there's something you need to do now!

Want to Throw a Street Party? Get Your Application In!

Buckinghamshire Council is really encouraging communities to organize their own street parties for VE Day. It's a fantastic way to celebrate together, right? But if your party involves closing off a public road – which most likely it will – you’ll need to apply for a temporary road closure by Friday, March 21st, 2025. This just makes sure everyone can get around safely, keeping cars off the street while people celebrate. Now, larger events will need a bit more paperwork – a risk assessment, an event management plan, a site plan, and proof of public liability insurance. Sounds daunting, I know! But the good news is, Buckinghamshire Council is waiving all the fees for VE Day 80th-anniversary street parties held between May 5th and May 11th, 2025. To apply, just email events@buckinghamshire.gov.uk.

Oh, and one quick note: If your gathering’s on private land – like a driveway or cul-de-sac – you don't need to apply to the council.

National Celebrations: Four Days of Remembrance and Joy

The national commemorations are going to be a big deal, spanning four days starting with the Early May Bank Holiday (May 5th). Get ready for:

  • May 5th: A military procession, a Red Arrows flypast (always a thrill!), and Union flags draping the Cenotaph – a really moving sight.
  • May 6th: A new installation of almost 30,000 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London. Just imagine the impact of that!
  • May 7th: A Victory in Europe Day Anniversary Concert in Westminster Hall. Sounds like a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some music.
  • May 8th: A service at Westminster Abbey followed by a concert at Horseguards Parade. A truly fitting end to the four-day commemoration.

Alongside all these official events, we’ll also have all the community street parties adding to the atmosphere, creating a powerful tribute to those who served and a joyous celebration of peace. And it doesn't stop there – the commemorations will also extend to VJ Day (August 15th), marking the end of the war in the Far East.

Be a Part of History!

Whether you're organizing a street party or simply want to attend the national commemorations, the 80th anniversary of VE Day is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the past and celebrate the peace we enjoy today. So, if you're planning a street party, don’t delay! Apply for your permit now and let's make this a truly memorable VE Day celebration. Let’s honour those who fought for our freedom and celebrate the peace they secured.
