Under the proposed plan, T-Mobile's wireless network will be routed through SpaceX's Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit, instead of mobile towers. Moreover, T-Mobile has stated that the vast majority of smartphones on its network will be compatible with the new service, thereby eliminating the need for complex hardware.
“The important thing about this is that it means there are no dead zones anywhere in the world for your cell phone," Elon Musk said during an event at the SpaceX facility in Texas.
The company is looking to provide text coverage which includes SMS, MMS, and messaging apps in the US and nearby areas with an aim to provide voice and data coverage sometime later. Moreover, the duo also said that they are ready to partner up with other service providers to take the service global.
The Tesla CEO stated that the greatest benefit of the service would be that it would eliminate the issue of no connectivity in certain areas, thereby helping people in life-threatening situations and potentially saving lives.
SpaceX is an unlisted company while T-Mobile US is listed. Its stock opened at $142.98 per share today.
