European telecom gear manufacturers Ericsson and Nokia have signed separate multi-year deals with Reliance Jio for supplying 5G equipment to assist in the rollout of Jio's 5G standalone network.

Jio, in its AGM, had announced that it would be launching a standalone (SA) 5G network. Unlike the other telcos which operate 5G via the NSA network i.e. providing 5G services via the existing 4G network, Jio is moving ahead to launch an independent 5G SA network whose speeds are said to be significantly faster than the NSA 5G network.

Byjus manages to raise funding even during a funding winter, read now.

"We are confident that Jio’s 5G network will accelerate India’s digitalization and will serve as the foundation for achieving our nation’s ‘Digital India’ vision,” said Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio.

This is the first time Ericsson is partnering with Jio. Ericsson, which supplies equipment globally and is well known for efficient and good quality products, will be supplying 5G RAN products, solutions from Ericsson Radio System, and E-band microwave mobile transport solution for Jio's 5G SA network.

“We are happy to partner with Jio in those ambitions, through Ericsson 5G Standalone connectivity, which will be a major catalyst in meeting those digital transformation goals across society, enterprise, and industry,” said Börje Ekholm, President & CEO of Ericsson.

Nokia, which considers India an integral market, will supply equipment from its AirScale portfolio (including base stations), high-capacity 5G Massive MIMO antennas, Remote Radio Heads to support different spectrum bands, and self-organizing network software.

"This ambitious project will introduce millions of people across India to premium 5G services, enabled by our industry-leading AirScale portfolio. We are proud that Reliance Jio has placed its trust in our technology and we look forward to a long and productive partnership with them," said Pekka Lundmark, President, and CEO of Nokia.

By bringing in Nokia, Ericsson, and existing supplier Samsung in for its 5G SA network, Jio has trimmed out Chinese companies like Huawei from its network which is a significant blow to the Chinese telecom equipment manufacturers.

The financial details of the contract were not disclosed to the public.
