Do you know drowning is among those several reasons which lead to a loss of life?

Shockingly, in the last decades, about 2.5 million people across the world lost their lives as 90% of these fatalities occur in lower-middle-income families, with children at higher risk.

A few years ago, A survey was conducted in the Sundarbans side of West Bengal to find out the mortality rate amongst children aged 1 to 4 years and 5 to 9 years. Following community meetings and numerous surveys, it was revealed that the drowning mortality rate in the region for children aged 1 to 4 years was 243.8 per 100 000, and for children aged 5 to 9 years was 38.8 per 100 000.

This world drowning prevention day, World Health Organization has released an investment case study on preventing drowning by just two actions - investing in daycare for children studying in preschool and teaching basic swimming skills to school-goers. These are the small step that can protect millions of lives.

According to Bloomberg Philanthropies founder Michael R. Bloomberg, Bloomberg Philanthropies has been working with partners to implement proven life-saving solutions. By bringing together governments and partners from around the world, they aim to spread this work and save more lives.

The World Drowning Prevention Day was declared in 2021 by the UN General Assembly resolution, and World Health Organization (WHO) to coordinate actions within the UN system to prevent drowning.

In India, Rural areas are at high risk due to unsafe drinking water. In India, these drowning cases are increasing at an alarming rate and need to be brought to attention for urgent preventive measures.

What can be done to prevent this to happen?

  • Installing barriers around water bodies
  • Provide children with safe play areas away from water
  • Teaching swimming to those who live near water or pursue water-related activities
  • Training should be provided in safety techniques like CPR
  • Ensure safer boating and shipping conditions with access to live jackets.
  • Building a flood-resistant infrastructure and early warning signals
