His full name was Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan. MS Swaminathan, the renowned Indian scientist, who started India’s Green Revolution, has passed away at the age of 98.
On August 7, 1925, Ms. Swaminathan born in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. He completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in agriculture) from Madras University and went to the United Kingdom to earn a Ph.D. in Plant Genetics and Cytogenetics from Cambridge University.
His work gifted some high yielding varieties of wheat and rice, improved the food production in India, and addressed the issue of food security in the whole country, promoted agricultural practices and assisted farmers in adopting the modern farming techniques.
He even received numerous awards like the World Food Prize and even India's second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan.His contributions and Commitments to India’s agricultural progress' has improved the agriculture and well-being of Citizens of India. His commitment have proved him to be a great scientist, agricultural leader and humanitarian.
He has held positions in a number of organizations, including those of Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1961–1972), Director General of ICAR and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (1972–1979), Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture (1979–80), Acting Deputy Chairman and later Member (Science and Agriculture), Planning Commission (1980–82), and Director General, International Rice Research Institute, the Philippines (1982–88).

Beyond his revolutionary contributions to agriculture, Dr. Swaminathan was a powerhouse of innovation and a nurturing mentor to many. His unwavering commitment to research and mentorship has left an indelible mark on countless scientists and innovators. I will always cherish my conversations with Dr. Swaminathan. His passion to see India progress was exemplary. His life and work will inspire generations to come. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
