In 2022, An Indian Teenager launched an AI company that not only aided researchers to effectively access relevant information available on the web but also got valued at 100 crores this month. When we ask about the impact of the internet and digitalization on students, we often get surprisingly positive results. As a youth that spends most of their time staying hooked on their mobile phones, it seems that about 50% of them are utilizing the internet as a boon. The creator behind the world’s largest MNC, Apple, Steve Jobs, once said, “Technology by itself doesn’t make leaders. Technology only amplifies true leadership.”
There are many examples we come across almost every day. Earlier this year, when an IIT graduate described the importance of 3D printing machines, a similar question popped into our heads: “Can technology help kids make sense of their world?”. According to scientific research, the provision of targeted videos and games, coupled with guidance for real-world activities, resulted in an enhancement of children's understanding of science and engineering practices and concepts.
Artificial Intelligence at Large
Believe it or not, the arrival of Chat GPT and Bard has transformed the world. Whether in workplaces or classrooms, the need to get ahead of AI is realized. A website conducted a survey and extended an invitation to adolescents to peruse Mr. Roose's column and share their perspectives on how educational institutions should address the presence of ChatGPT.
Many arrived at the consensus that the chatbot represented a potent tool, albeit occasionally unreliable. Concerns ranged from the potential erosion of motivation, creativity, and critical thinking to fears of widespread cheating. However, a subset of teenagers contended that AI signifies the future and advocated for schools to embrace its integration rather than imposing restrictions. Contrarily, there was at least one student who dismissed the entire discourse as an overreaction, expressing, “Everyone needs to chill out!” she wrote. “ChatGPT is certainly not the end of the world, nor the eradication of writing as a whole.”
Knowledge fell through Millenials
Among the world's foremost business magnates, Bill Gates shared a revelation, stating that he got a major surprise just last year. His engagement with the OpenAI team commenced in 2016, and their consistent progress has left a lasting impression on him. In mid-2022, fueled by my excitement about their endeavors, he presented them with a challenge: to train an artificial intelligence capable of excelling in an Advanced Placement Biology exam. The objective was for it to answer questions beyond its specific training, focusing on the need for critical thinking in biology as opposed to mere factual recall.
He anticipated that this challenge would occupy them for a considerable two or three years. Astonishingly, they completed it within a mere few months.
What we may not fully grasp even now is that the introduction of Artificial Intelligence to the world was orchestrated by the efforts of Millennials and preceding generations, and it is their accumulated knowledge that we continue to carry forward. The next generation would be smarter and as witnessed in the real world, many times in positive ways.
