On July 26, India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas, also known as Kargil Victory Day, to commemorate its victory over Pakistan in 1999. The day celebrates the courage and sacrifices made by Indian soldiers throughout the intense conflict.
History of Kargil Vijay Diwas
Since the Indo-Pak War in 1971, there have been several armed conflicts, particularly due to militant activities in Kashmir, which raise tensions between India and Pakistan during the 1990s. Both countries conducted nuclear tests in 1998. To address the ongoing problem, India and Pakistan signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999.
During Operation Badr, Pakistani armed forces covertly entered the Indian side of the Line of Control(LOC), catching Indian soldiers off guard about the extent of the intrusion. In response, the Indian Army deployed 30,000 soldiers for Operation Vijay, which lasted more than 60 days. The Kargil War finally concluded on 26th July, leading to the annual celebration of Kargil Vijay Diwas since 1999 to commemorate this day.
Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas is a significant occasion dedicated to honoring and remembering the bravery of our Indian armed forces. It serves as a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation. Throughout the country, several parades, events, and ceremonies are held to express respect and gratitude for the heroes of the Kargil War.
The focal point of the celebrations is the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh, where the main ceremony takes place. This year, a two-day celebration is being organized by the Indian Army on July 25 and 26, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attending as the chief guest.
Celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated nationwide with various activities organized by the Indian Army. On this day, a motorcycling expedition is launched, and families of martyrs are invited to attend memorial ceremonies and other events. Cultural shows feature patriotic songs that evoke a sense of pride and unity.
The Prime Minister, at Amar Jawan Jyoti near India Gate, pays tribute to the brave soldiers who fought gallantly during the Kargil war, making it a special day in India on July 26. The Mirage 2000 aircraft played a crucial role in the combat against Pakistani soldiers in the snowy peaks of Kargil.
The slopes of Tololing Hill in Dras house another memorial to the Kargil War, built by the Indian Army to honor the fallen soldiers. The memorial's entrance is adorned with the poem 'Pushp Kii Abhilasha,' and the names of the martyrs are inscribed on the Memorial Wall, forever remembered and honored.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is a day of national pride and to reaffirm our commitment to national security. We should all take this day to reflect on the importance of peace and to pray for the continued safety of our soldiers.
