“Everything needs not to be spoken aloud in courts”.
This simple yet very powerful message was conveyed by the Supreme Court in a recent hearing on a human rights case when the bench head allowed deaf lawyer Sarah Sunny to present her case. The event was a "dream come true" for her because Sarah had always wanted to appear in the country's highest court of justice. But at the same time, she had no idea that it would be completed so quickly and would happen in the presence of the Chief Justice of India. This has also given her more confidence and courage in her journey to become a role model for people with special needs and thus, to celebrate her success we must go through her journey.
Family Support Amid Hearing Impairment
In 1998, Sarah along with her twin sister Maria was born to a couple named Sunny Parambett and Betty Parambett in Kottayam, Kerala. Sarah has wanted to be an advocate since she was a child, while her twin has chosen Chartered Accountancy as a career and works for a French Audit Firm. Sarah has an eight-year-old elder brother who works in Texas, in addition to a twin sister. All of these siblings were born with hearing impairment yet their family has always been supportive, and she has never felt inferior to anyone because of their hearing impairment.
Overcoming Challenges in Education
Sarah's family support and motivation helped her to pursue schooling education, which she began with Cluny Convent High School in Malleshwarm. Later, she was admitted to St. Claret Pre-University to finish her 10 + 2 education. Further, she went to Jyoti Niwas College to complete her Bachelor’s and had to face a lot of criticism because of her disability. Yet, the powerful feminine never stepped back and kept moving ahead.
Pursuing Legal Dreams Persistently
As the journey moved forward, she began pursuing a Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) from St. Joseph College of Law in 2017. She also interned at the Red Cross Society of India, the Center for Law and Policy Research, and other organizations till 2022. But in 2023, she finally became a full-time lawyer at Thiru & Thiru Co.
Not only that, but she is a member of the Human Rights Law Network and the National Association of Deaf Advocacy. Though everything was going well, Sarah had a dream of appearing in court and arguing the case, but she had no idea that her dream would come true in 2023.
Remarkable Legal Milestones
In spite of the fact that the journey was fraught with peril, Sarah's unwavering faith in herself helped her achieve the recognition she deserved. And that’s why she has been able to become the first deaf lawyer to enroll in the Bar Council of Karnataka. Apart from this, she has been a member of the Human Rights Law Network and Advocacy of the National Association of Deaf as well.
Ultimately, the Supreme Court’s decision to let Sarah present the case has won the hearts of many people with disabilities along with motivating them to follow their dreams. But this doesn’t end here as there is still more to achieve for Sarah and people like Sarah who are born to shine. The way she handled all the criticism and still kept moving forward shows how eternally powerful she is. Also, Sarah’s journey is evidence proving that success favors only the hard workers and self-believers.
