Every year on June 5, World Environment Day (WED) promotes environmental protection by bringing attention to it and encouraging people to take action. Supported by numerous organizations, businesses, and governments, it is the primary United Nations outreach day dedicated to environmental issues. Since its inception in 1973, WED has served as a platform to address a range of environmental concerns, including marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development, and wildlife crime. With participation from over 143 countries each year, it has become a global movement for public engagement.

Origin of World Environment Day

The concept of World Environment Day emerged from the 1972 United Nations Conference on Human Environment in Stockholm, which marked the first major international gathering to prioritize environmental matters. During this conference, the United Nations Environment Programme was established. In 1974, the first World Environment Day was celebrated with the theme "Only My Earth." Ever since different countries have chosen an annual theme to promote participation and inspire action aligned with environmental causes.

World Environment Day: Theme 2023

For the year 2023, Côte d'Ivoire has been designated as the host country for World Environment Day. The chosen theme is "Solutions to Plastic Pollution," highlighting the urgent need to address the adverse effects of plastic on the environment. This year's celebrations will center around raising awareness, encouraging individuals and communities to give up plastic usage, and recognizing plastic pollution as a significant contributor to environmental degradation. The associated hashtag, #BeatPlasticPollution, will act as a call to action for the entire world.

World Environment Day is an internationally recognized occasion that mobilizes global participation in environmental conservation efforts. It is followed by a series of events, including seminars, conferences, and awareness campaigns, all centered around the chosen theme of the year. These activities provide a platform for government and non-government organizations to share their innovative solutions.  By active involvement of individuals and communities, World Environment Day fosters a collective approach to preserving our planet for future generations.
