The world remembers 2019 when it was the start of getting trapped in the clutches of the pandemic which will have them restricted in the boundaries of their own houses. At those times of difficulty when families were struggling to accumulate food based on their needs some families didn’t even have enough to eat one time a day. Still, some people stepped forward and contribute their time to make some impact. Today, As per the team stage, there are over 1 billion people who volunteer worldwide and are associated with different not-for-profits for the same cause. Volunteers are working not only for food distributions but also contributing to the education of slum children. By using what they have learnt over the years they are making a difference in the respective nations by introducing innovative education platforms.
Impact of Volunteering on the Indian Economy
Education is the right of every kid but reaching education is often hard for some considering the school fee. Volunteers make education affordable by many of them taking no fee for sharing the knowledge. As per The Central Statistical Institute of India, the country has about 33 lakh NGOs out of which many are working in the education sphere.
There are about 6.55 crore slum populations in India as per the last 2011 Census, where you will often find kids getting involved in some meager tasks to fulfill their family needs. Basic education which is a must for proper social change in their life is the least of their concern.
In order to increase literacy and growth rate, the Indian government has launched many initiatives. Earlier looking at their immense dedication towards these selfless tasks Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Jagan YS Mohan Reddy said, “Volunteers are brand ambassadors of all welfare schemes initiated by the government and they should build a positive image among the public.”
If we look at the stats then as of 2021, the literacy rate in rural India was around 73.5%, and as the rural economy currently contributes to 25-30% of the country’s GDP, literacy in rural India is also important for the growth of the country’s economy. Basic education has always participated in making the necessary contribution to businesses and has given several ideas which have also been impactful to the economy.
Many evaluations have suggested that more than half of the children attend school in slums. However, it is also evident that the dropout rate is also a fact in schools established in such areas. Volunteers immensely help in promoting the need of education which further provides more human resources necessary for the economic success of the country.
Preparing the Voices of Tomorrow with Education
Many kids from the slum now follow a routine life that involves primary education at school. They not only learn the alphabet but also focus on basic social skills in a growing environment.
Education initiates social change by changing man's mindset, outlook, thinking, and attitude. Remembering the words of Nelson Mandela, Education (truly) is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.
Volunteers not only give back to millions of others but also create a much kinder world. With Education and proper guidance, when kids are taught they try to embrace learning. We are looking forward to India which has learned from others and broadened its horizon.
Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Central Square Foundation, Asha for Education, Akanksha Foundation, The Akshaya Patra Foundation, IIMPACT, and Robin Hood Academies are only a few names that are fighting illiteracy by helping the leaders of tomorrow raise their voices today!
