Life is full of obstacles, and we rarely have perfect control over our circumstances. Nithin Kamath, co-founder and CEO of Zerodha, recently tweeted a photo of himself with his father-in-law and described how this 70-year-old man taught him a vital lesson about contentment and genuine freedom.
Nithin’s father-in-law, Shivaji Patil, retired from the Indian Army and started a grocery shop in Belgaum, Karnataka. During his service, Patil lost his fingers to frostbite in the Kargil War. Despite his disability, Patil regularly goes to the local market on his decades-old scooter to buy groceries for his shop. Nithin's mother-in-law is his lone helper as she runs the shop and administers the house.
In a series of tweets, Nithin further pointed out how his father-in-law refuses to stop working, despite the success of him and his wife, Seema. His passion for the job is evident as he speaks about the 25 per cent margins he works with when buying and selling.
All this has taught Nithin a lifelong lesson about being content and finding true freedom. He learned from Patil that money couldn’t buy contentment and that being active mentally and physically is the key to living a good life until the end.
From living a life of contentment, Patil has also set an example for Nithin to work hard and persevere through hardships. Nithin revealed that when he requested his daughter's hand in marriage in 2007, his father-in-law tried to persuade him to pursue a government post during his trying period. The Zerodha’s co-founder now holds a net worth of $2 Billion.
Nithin concludes by writing. “I have no doubt that the answer is to be content and never stop being active mentally and physically. Money can't buy this, and he is the best example”.
It is nice to hear such stories of motivation and positivity, especially at difficult times. Nithin’s story of how his father-in-law taught him the importance of being content stands out as an inspiration to all of us. So, let us learn from Patil’s zest for life – to find peace and happiness through contentment and being active, no matter the circumstances.
