Yesterday the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced, "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2023 #NobelPeacePrize to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all,"
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel honours that were established with the support of a Swedish Industrialist, named Alfred Nobel. These prizes are awarded in the Categories of Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature.
Who is Narges Mohammadi?
Narges Mohammadi, a professional engineer, holds the position of Vice President at the Defenders of Human Rights Center. In 2009, Due to a Jail Sentence, She lost her Post. As a Journalist, She has written many articles presenting her views on the reforms, strategies, and tactics.
Mohammadi became the 19th woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and the second Iranian woman to achieve this honor, following human rights activist Shirin Ebadi's win in 2003. Remarkably, this marks the fifth occasion in the 122-year history of the awards when the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to an individual in prison or under house arrest.

Her Works
Mohammadi has a degree in physics and later started her career as an engineer. She gradually became an advocate for equality and women’s rights. Later, Due to the Jail Sentence, She even lost her engineering position in the year 2009.
She worked as a journalist and wrote for several reformist publications. She even wrote many articles concerning social reforms in Iran and published her own essay collection named The Reforms, the Strategy, and the Tactics.
Over the years she has described her views in the form of her writings and arguments on Social Reforms. She also received a reportage honor at the International Film Festival and Human Rights Forum for her book, "White Torture: Interviews with Iranian Women Prisoners."
Her Awards include the Alexander Langer Award in 2009, UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, and Olof Palme Prize earlier in 2023. Awarded the 2010 Felix Ermacora Human Rights Prize, Ebadi also gave Mohammadi a special mention.
