UPI Faces Major Outage, Users Struggle With Payments Across India
Thousands of users across India reported issues with UPI (Unified Payments Interface) services on Friday, April 12. Several popular apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm experienced problems, leaving people unable to make payments or complete transactions.
Users Flood Social Media With Complaints
People took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to complain about the issue. Many said they couldn’t send money, scan QR codes, or receive payments. Some shared screenshots showing failed transactions, especially on apps like Google Pay and PhonePe.
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks real-time outages, thousands of complaints were recorded. The most reported problems were related to payment failures and QR scanning not working.
What Caused the Outage?
As of now, the exact reason for the outage hasn't been confirmed. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which runs the UPI system, has not released a statement. PhonePe and Google Pay also haven’t officially commented yet.
These technical glitches are causing major disruptions as UPI has become one of the most popular ways to make digital payments in India.
How to Fix Failed Transactions on Google Pay and PhonePe
If your transaction didn’t go through, here are a few things you can try:
1. Wait and Try Again:
Many outages are temporary. Retry your transaction after a short break.
2. Check Your Bank Balance:
Sometimes money gets deducted even if the transaction fails. Check your bank app or passbook for confirmation.
3. Look for Refunds:
Failed payments are usually reversed within 24–48 hours. You’ll get the money back if it was deducted.
4. Update Your App:
Make sure your payment apps are updated. Bugs in older versions can cause issues.
5. Use Another Method:
If the app is still down, try using net banking, credit cards, or another UPI app.
