Former Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi has expressed strong opposition to India's recent abstention on a United Nations resolution addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In a statement, Gandhi emphasized her party's condemnation of Hamas' attacks while deploring the Israeli state's actions in response to the conflict. She called for the international community to support a cessation of military activity and urged the world's most influential voices to promote peace.

Gandhi highlighted the tragic events leading to this conflict, with Hamas launching a brutal attack on Israel, resulting in over a thousand casualties, primarily civilians. She underlined the disproportionate and destructive nature of Israel's response, especially affecting innocent children, women, and men who have long suffered from discrimination and hardship.

The Congress party's consistent stance has been in favor of direct negotiations for a sovereign, independent, viable, and secure state of Palestine, coexisting peacefully with Israel. Gandhi stressed the importance of justice for lasting peace, condemning Israel's longstanding blockade on Gaza and the displacement of Palestinians from their land in the West Bank.

Sonia Gandhi further emphasized the need for influential countries to restore the two-state vision and reiterated that both Palestinians and Israelis have the right to live in a just peace. She pointed out the recent shift in India's position on Palestine following the Gaza conflict and expressed the Congress's strong opposition to India's abstention from the recent UN General Assembly Resolution calling for a humanitarian truce.

Gandhi warned that the conflict's continuation would hinder long-term peace in the region, with entire families being affected, neighborhoods reduced to rubble, and the denial of essential resources to the Palestinian people. She called out the dehumanizing language used by Israeli officials and criticized the indiscriminate death and destruction unleashed upon the ordinary people of Gaza.

Opposition parties in India have also criticized the country's abstention from the UN resolution, while the ruling BJP emphasized India's stance against terrorism. The conflict has claimed thousands of lives, with escalating tensions in both Gaza and the West Bank, raising concerns about the future.
