Hello Readers,
Did you hear?
Iran might take action against Afghanistan!
In a major development for the region, tensions are rising between Iran and Afghanistan. Iran is protesting Afghanistan’s plans to fill the Pashan Dam and build two more dams on the Farah River, claiming that Afghanistan violating water-sharing agreements between the two nations. Water scarcity is a major issue in Iran as water from the Helmand River originating from Afghanistan is very important for its citizens! Iran has now called upon the Taliban to honor the bilateral agreements and that it will use “all tools” necessary to protect its water rights! Afghanistan’s response?
Afghanistan has warned against ‘irresponsible comments’!
Kabul has rebuked Tehran against making ‘irresponsible comments’ about the water rights issue. Some suggest the issue has been going on for over 150 years as both countries face sharp water shortages during the summer. The Taliban claims that it needs the water for agriculture, but the dam would restrict water flow into downstream regions like southern Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan! While both parties have called for further diplomatic discussions, this issue could escalate if it continues. Did you hear about the Taliban’s issue with Pakistan?
Afghanistan and Pakistan’s tensions are rising!
Diplomatic relations have taken a major hit as the Taliban has slammed Pakistan’s airstrike that claimed over 40 lives. Pakistan claims it hit the hideout of TTP fighters that had taken refuge in Afghanistan while the latter has denied the allegations, claiming the former’s jets targeted civilians! The Pakistan Taliban has threatened to target Pakistani military business interests as the TTP went one step ahead. It kidnapped 18 Pakistani nuclear engineers, further worsening the internal crisis in the country. But that’s not the end.
The BLA is making progress against the Pak govt!
Pakistan is facing two enemies internally. While it had its hands full with dealing with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) carried out fresh attacks against the Pakistani government. They bombed a bus carrying paramilitary soldiers, killing over 6 and injuring well over 20 troops! Moreover, the BLA launched a massive attack in Khudzar which forced local police to abandon the area. The attack was reportedly in response to mistreatment of Baloch women as the BLA is now in control of the Khudzar district! What about India?
India has invited Pakistan and Bangladesh!!
Despite the rising tensions against its neighbours, the Indian government has extended invitations to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, some West and Central Asian officials for the 150th anniversary of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This is a first of its kind initiative by the Indian government to keep aside differences celebrate a shared history between countries who were part of “Undivided India” at the time of the IMD’s establishment. This is a major step by the Indian government to promote regional peace and boost ties between all the countries.
