In this edition of Jobaaj Stories, we bring to you the experiences and journey of CA Amit Nagpal, a Chartered Accountant who established his presence in the Hospitality industry as the CFO of Massive Restaurants, a global company with presence in 9 countries. Read on, to be inspired!
Born in 1985 as a single child, Amit belonged to the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
As a student, he had been an average academic, and yet he had a unique dedication to his career growth.
He enrolled in the ICAI and started out on the journey that all CA aspirants go through.
However, he decided to go the extra mile and also enrolled in an evening MBA college, thereby dedicating the next 2 years to his academic progression.
It was only his dedication to his career that allowed him to power throughout the day, traverse through his coaching classes, articleship training, AND evening MBA classes. (And yes! This CAN be considered Abnormally hardworking)
On TOP of it, he also completed many certifications such as NCFM(NSE), CFM, IFRS, etc.
Naturally, his hard work proved fruitful as he cleared both the CA program and MBA in 2008.
However, he faced some difficulties during the ICAI placement process as his 10th-grade score wasn't up to the mark according to some companies.
Eventually, he got an offer from PWC and moved to Mumbai.
For a guy from Indore, moving to Mumbai was certainly a big deal, but he persevered through the transition process.
However, soon he got an offer from a company in Indore(his home city!), which led him to quit PWC and head home.
Although this could be considered a blunder professionally, (considering that he had moved from a tier-1 company to a tier-2 company) but his homesickness got the best of him.
Soon he got an offer in Delhi, from Park Hotels, a luxury hotel chain. But this time, he had decided to evaluate the offer first before making any rash decision.
It turned out to be a leadership role, as the Associate Director at Power hotels, something he found appealing and decided to pursue.
His job role had vastly expanded and now included the responsibilities of fundraising and managing franchisee contracts for the company's sub-brands.
His next role was Head of Finance for Elevation Capital. There he got to work in a variety of roles in Accounting, Business Expansion, and Investor Relations.
All through his career journey, Amit never failed to re-align his career direction when needed!
That's what allowed him to take risks with the job profiles and companies that he wanted to pursue.
Fast forward a few years, and he was approached for the role of CFO of Azure hospitality!
The offer was accepted and that became the defining moment of his career as it catapulted him deeper into the hospitality industry.
Soon he got another offer to be the CEO of Massive restaurants, an Indian global company that owns brands like Masala Library, Papaya, and Bo Tai.
As a finance professional in the hospitality industry, his job role was quite prominent and included but not limited to, corresponding with shareholders, fundraising, investor relations, etc.
Currently, he still operates as the CFO of Massive restaurants.
We observe that as a finance professional, he kept upskilling himself at EACH point of his life.
Even after becoming a CA, he kept pursuing more and more challenging roles and ultimately found his calling, the hospitality industry!
Which he is happily pursuing now!
